“Addicted To Kaolin” A Public Page On Facebook For Porcelain Fanatics
Why write about a Facebook page Addicted to Kaolin? Kaolin is a clay mineral. Your editor was in the estate sale and antique business for over 20 years and porcelain of all types was always a passion. It was and is highly sought after at estate sales by collectors. People would and still may line up 24 or more hours before a sale to have the opportunity to purchase beautiful pieces that have long since become hard to find.
Marjorie Merriweather Posts’ home, Hillwood inside Washington D.C, – was purchased by her in the mid 1950’s to be her home and upon her death become a museum. As the heir to the Post Cereal fortune (that eventually became General Foods) her taste for collecting porcelain surged in the second decade of the 20th century while living in New York. As a wealthy married woman she started furnishing her New York home with elegant decor including porcelain. Her favorite became Sevres porcelain from France and the Hillwood Museum has one of the largest collections of Sevres in the world. (As added information she also collected and there is an entire room dedicated to Faberge which dates from the time she was married to Joseph E. Davies, who served as Ambassador to the Soviet Union. At the time the Soviet Union was looking to raise capital and sell off many of the treasures that had been seized from Churches, the imperial family and the aristocracy. Marjorie who had become an avid collector with many residences purchased containers filled with Russian treasures). By doing so she has preserved these treasures for many future generations to enjoy.
The Facebook group under the title Addicted to Kaolin showcases and addresses porcelain from every era, continent and of every style.
