Learn About Estate Sales

To learn about estate sales understanding the term estate sales now covers a broad description for liquidating personal property today.

Estate liquidations are needed when a family or friend is deceased or downsizing. Baby boomers currently are the largest group (millions) that are now utilizing estate sale companies to help them accomplish this. This has caused a huge growth in the number of estate sale companies across the country.

Helpful tips to understand the estate sale process.

Decide what your goal is. If downsizing what do you want to keep and what is to be sold. Be sure you have this decision before inviting estate sale companies to come to interview and view what they would sell.

Find estate sale companies. Organizations, associations, and estate sale listing websites offer estate sale company names and their current sales. A website that advertises estate sales and estate sale companies is not in the liquidation business and does not have liquidation experience. They are a website source of advertising estate sale companies and estate sales to grow their advertising commerce.

When you have found estate sale companies in your area, call them. Speak with them about what types of estates they conduct. Each estate liquidator is different (such as whether they will work with a hoarder sale, what value of sale they will work with – some companies will work with any value, others may only work with sales that they feel will bring a minimum dollar value. With the numerous costs of an estate sale including staff, advertising, insurance, licensing fees, etc. all of this is taken into consideration to determine what types of sales they can or cannot accept.

It is important inquire what their former background is (how did the acquire their knowledge and experience) and how long have they been conducting estate sales. Once you feel you have narrowed it down to a few estate sale companies setup face to face interviews and show them through your property.

Your interview should include a conversation about your goals, concerns, how they work ( advertising, pricing, security, entrance procedures, payments accepted, payout, clean out etc), a thorough review of their contract, along with dates available, time of the sale, allowing them unfettered access to the property to prepare for the sale, and any other questions. They will also ask you questions and determine if your sale can be beneficial to both parties. It should be conversation that both parties leave with a clear understanding of what to expect.

It is important that both seller and estate sale company have trust and confidence in each other.

Learn About Estate Sales – Estate Sales News Your Internet Source

Yesterday when I went to the hair salon I was waiting for a shampoo and a lady sitting next to me over heard my conversation about today’s trip to Chicago to cover an estate sale.

The woman asked me what I did and how I was involved. When I explained to her that I was the editor of Estate Sales News, an online source to learn about estate sales, what they are, the process, how to find and hire an estate sale company, etc. she said do you have a business card?

She proceeded to tell me about two different friends. Different circumstances and locations, but both of them had homes filled with personal items and they needed to sell the contents off. One had just gotten divorced and the contents were part of her settlement, the other needed to drastically downsize.

Learn About Estate Sales – What Sources Are You Using?

learn about estate salesEstate Sales News searches the internet daily for anything new in the estate sale business and we are finding more and more sources offering advice about estate sales, from how an estate sale works, how to choose an estate sale company, estate sale contracts, pricing, staging, clean outs etc.

It is vital for perspective estate sellers to find their information from sources that have had experience in the estate liquidation business or were at some time estate liquidators. Books have been written about how to hold your own estate sale by book authors and estate sale liquidators. Why an estate sale liquidator would want to tell you how to hold your own estate sale would appear to be a means of making money selling books and persuading you that you need to hire an professional estate liquidator (perhaps them).

Hiring a professional estate sale company is like hiring a Realtor to sell your property or an attorney to draw up a will or prepare and read through legal documents. You hire them because of their expertise, experience and knowledge in their specific field. The same applies to hiring an estate sale company.

To learn about estate sales begin by talking to anyone you know who has had one. Use the internet to find articles written by estate liquidators and others in the estate sale business. Follow up by looking at estate sale listing sites and associations. They can offer further information. You will also be able to find estate sale companies in your area and then you can begin the process of looking at their liquidators current estate sales or events and any internet reviews. Keep in mind that some buyers and sellers may post an unfavorable review and it may be wise if only one or two to call the estate liquidator and speak by telephone with them about these reviews.

Many articles are appearing on the internet written by authors who write on a variety of subjects that their assistants research for them and they then publish. This may be a newsy article, but nothing replaces first hand professional experience and knowledge of the process in this very complex industry.

An example would be what is happening with the sale of ivory and taxidermied endangered species including foul, fish, and other wildlife. These are state issues and may also be federal issues depending upon the items.

However you learn about estate sales, make sure to thoroughly review not only the information provided, but the sources that the information comes from.

Estate Sales News 2014 Year In Review – What We Have Learned & Shared

Slide1With Christmas eve less than a week away Estate Sales News wants to look back at what was under the tree this year for us and our estate sale going audience. This truly is a labor of love and we have enjoyed all the opportunities it has presented.

In February 2014 Estate Sales News flew to Memphis, TN to report on the 2014 Estate Sales Conference sponsored by EstateSales.Net and we were a guest speaker at the conference discussing the basics of the estate sale contract. Since late February we have presented many articles on this most important topic and answered numerous requests from sellers and estate liquidators for more information, keeping in mind we are not an attorney and we do not give legal advice.

We have been to California on several occasions to report on a variety of estate sales including one with the crown of a granddaughter of Queen Victoria, a massive sale of multiple collections from a National Geographic photographer and Indian Agent from the 1920’s to name a few.

We have also covered two estate sales (one including an auction) in Michigan. A fantastic collection of Mid-Century Modern furnishings, Jensen sterling, art glass, and more in Midland and another sale that included a large taxidermy auction in Portland, MI.

We had the delightful pleasure of visiting with Judy Martin, nationally known appraiser and estate liquidator at a fabulous sale in a Chicago suburb who provided great information about the estate sale industry and what’s selling as well as her sale for a famous Chicago artist.

Along with our travels, we have interviewed several estate sale companies across the country with unique sales, spoken to the owners of several national estate sale listing websites about the changes they are making to their websites to meet the increasing needs of a rapidly growing liquidation industry and the evolution of the estate sale business.

One of our larger projects this year was writing about How To Choose An Estate Sale Company. We covered in depth what to look for as well as providing a printable list to assist you in the process of finding and hiring an estate sale company.

Estate Sales News has featured articles on the sale of ivory, sales tax, inheritance tax, as well as featured guest articles from Julie Hall, nationally known owner, director of the American Society of Estate Liquidators (ASEL), Lofty.com (a new way of liquidating items that may not be a perfect fit in an estate sale) and of course we have produced many videos from estate sales and liquidation specialists and appraisers.

We have also been been included as a resource by EstateSales.Net for the 7,000 companies listed with them and shared our information with ASEL and other online resources.

Along with good news we have reported on some estate liquidation companies that were not typical of this great industry.

Majolica, gesso, and ormolu were some of the educational topics we wrote about.

We have featured a ThrowBack Thursday feature for most of the year.

Our thanks to EstateSale.company for sharing interesting articles from their collectors corner.

It’s been quite a year at EstateSalesNews.com and we thank everyone mentioned above along with all those who have assisted us in providing a free service to sellers looking to hire estate sale companies, buyers, and estate liquidators.

As the Editor and writer for EstateSalesNews.com it is with great pride to share this overview of some of what we have provided to our audience.

We will be taking some time now to spend with our family for this Christmas season. Please feel free to look into our nearly two years of archival information.

From our house to yours EstateSalesNews.com wishes you a Christmas of joy and happiness the blessings of family and friends.

Estate Sales Friday – What You Can See And Learn

Estate Sale signEstate Sales News has received many comments on our part one interview with Judy Martin, ISA, CAPP. Our dialogue will continue with Judy on Monday where she takes us on a tour of the home in Morgan Park Chicago. It should be pointed out that this sale was in the process of staging, cleaning, and hadn’t been priced. It provides a good perspective about the work it takes to prepare for an estate sale.

When you walk into an estate sales today take the time to look around at how it’s been staged, whether the items have been cleaned, and if the electronics have been tested. Remember that the items sold at estate sales are usually sold as is and most estate sale companies have a no return no refund policy.

There are thousands of estate sales across the country starting today. If you’re looking for items, this is a great source. If you are interested in having an estate sale and finding a liquidator go check out your local sales to see how they are handled and who impressed you.

Judy Martin’s video on Monday.

If it’s Friday, it’s estate sales.

ISA Conference In Chicago On Estate Sales

The discussion of estate sales at the Chicago conference of the International Society of Appraisers was engaging and brought forth many views.

We discussed how ISA appraisers can be beneficial to estate liquidations. The degree of commitment that is required by an ISA appraiser to conduct estate sales. Estate sales are a business not a hobby.

Is an estate sale the right choice for the client. It isn’t just quantity. The best market for some items may be at auction and an ISA appraiser can assist with brokering this. As part of their training they are educated in the larger auction houses across the country.

We discussed how ISA appraisers can work in tandem with estate sale companies in a beneficial manner for both.

Our discussion included how estate sales work. Learning about staging, security, advertising, crowd control were just a few of the topics we touched on. How many hats does an ISA appraiser want to wear.

We also discussed online auctions and franchises. These are two hot topics.

It should be mentioned that online auctions and franchises have found a place for estate liquidators as well as considerations for appraisers.

We were booked for a 1 hour and 15 minute discussion and we ran over our time a bit.

Much information was covered and more will be discussed in greater detail.

Many thanks to the International Society of Appraisers for inviting me and giving me this platform to discuss the wonderful world of estate sales.
