Why Learn About Estates?

Why learn about estate sales? If you are a baby boomer or an heir settling an estate you want to understand the liquidation process and hire the right estate sale company for your needs.

A liquidator with 20 plus years in the estate liquidation business conducting estate and moving sales as the editor of EstateSalesNews.com I learned by hands on experience. Experience working estate sales is the best teacher of knowledge and handling a variety of situations.

Estate sale advertising listing websites are able to put you in contact with estate sale companies in your area.

Experience and knowledge about estate sales is done by actually working at estate sales.

Estate Liquidators And Realtors Should Work Together

Baby boomers are on the move in droves and estate sales are tied closely to real estate sales. Estate liquidators and Realtors should work together.

Your Estate Sales News Editor has been a Realtor and estate liquidator. Both professions work for the seller. Both parties should determine what will be in the best interest of the seller and compromises will need to be made.

Realtors like to have a seller declutter for best results. Eliminating personal property that can be distracting for a buyer.

The estate liquidator doesn’t want the seller to eliminate anything until they have walked through the property to see what can be sold.

Estate sale companies and Realtors best serve the seller when they work together. Sitting down for a conversation about the long term outcome for the seller is beneficial.

Telling The Seller’s Story Draws Audiences For Estate Sales

Telling the sellers story of an estate sale draws audiences for estate sales.

Understanding who the sellers were, why they collected, what they did, and where they shopped is insightful. The sellers story in estate sales provides provenance to what is for sale.

Here is a partial story about a sale taking place this week in Los Angeles, CA starting on Wed. July, 27 by Again L.A. Estate Sales. “Huge USC Exec Estate – Mid Century, 70s, Toys, Tools, Hoarder Sale”.

“This is the estate of an incredibly interesting couple – both were incredibly dynamic individuals! Leonard Wines, hereafter referred to as the Mister -was a career University of Southern California figure who began his USC career as Coordinator of Communications and then ultimately Director of Pubic Reltations. He took an early retirement in the eighties and dived right into the world of computers…becoming a product manager with Data Desk International and a faculty member with the annual San Francisco Macworld Exposition. His Missus – Clara Vines was an equally dynamic individual! Clara spent the 1950s working the with State Department serving through the Middle East and Asia before marrying her lifetime partner and raising two sons. Clara loved the arts and being an artist at heart – her greatest love was working with her hands creating  many wonderful pieces of pottery, sculpture, jewelry, textiles, and more! The couple loved music and acquired a large collection of jazz records and literally every room on the property was wired for sound. Their property features a large garden area filled with plants and it must have been quite the retreat in the past!

This is a wonderful example before a list of the major contents that let’s buyers know what and why this home is so filled. Here is a link to this sale to read more.

Many estate sale companies write these stories opening life’s journey.

Estate Sale Collections Hot Or Not

Estate sale collections hot or not. Most estate sales have some collection included in the sale, however many collections are not hot right now. They can be large or small.

Understanding that collections that were once highly treasured and sought after have gone cold is not easy for most sellers to except.

Estate sale companies do not want to sell your items cheap. Commissioned based estate sales are looking for the best or highest value for items in the sale. The more an estate sale company can sell your  contents for, the more they receive in commission.

It is not easy for sellers to accept that items such as hummels, collector plates, and other collectibles from the last forty plus years do not have the value paid for them.

Estate Liquidators Wear Many Hats With Expertise

Estate liquidators wears many hats with expertise in a variety of fields associated with the liquidation of personal property.

Personal property liquidators are individuals earning a living as entrepreneurs. They do not work a five day a week job from 9-5. Estate liquidators require time management ability, motivation, dedication, knowledge, marketing skills, and more. They must determine their schedule, time, and requirements for each estate sale.

An estate sale liquidator must know and understand what the estate sale process is. Liquidators need knowledge in selling personal property. Estate sale company owners will work endless long hours and weekends. Often with no days off for weeks at a time.

Estate liquidators need to be a business person, salesperson, and negotiator. Liquidators have to be able to handle any situations that arise during the sale.

Estate Sale Etiquette Even In The Summer Heat

Estate sale etiquette should be used even in the summer heat.

In the summer, many homes may not have air conditioning, With hot and humid weather shop estate sales and be prepared. Wear light weight clothing to keep you cool, have plenty of water in your vehicle (preferably in a cooler) and bring your patience. Estate sale etiquette is always needed and even more when the temperatures rise.

Estate sale staff working under these conditions are taxed by the heat and humidity as well. They have been through setting up the sale. Now they are handling the crowds that come through the property. Most estate sale companies will try to provide fans to keep the air moving if there isn’t air conditioning.

Buyers tempers can flare under hot weather conditions so be prepared. Entering the premises with your mind cool and with knowledge about the rules of the estate sale company makes a difference.

If you have items you want to purchase check with estate sale staff or the liquidator before the sale starts. Ask them if they limit the number of buyers in the home. Can they bring in purses or bags. What order do they work with customers. When you want to purchase items how do they handle them. Do they put them aside marked sold? Knowing how things work inside the estate sale will help buyers and prevent confusion or misunderstandings with estate liquidators.

Working With The Elderly It Is Not Just Stuff

It is not just stuff to an older or elderly person. Someone I know was downsizing her 90 year old Mom to move to an assisted living apartment. She had been there 50 years.  With the stress of packing and eliminating what wouldn’t fit in her mother’s new home she spoke of it as just stuff.

It isn’t just stuff to an older person having to downsize. It is a lifetime of memories. Shared with loved ones here and passed. Working with those who have been trained or have years of experience with the elderly is important to prepare them for the moment when delicate decisions must be made.

CRTS and others can teach those estate liquidators how to help ease this heavy task.

Estate sales can sell off much of what cannot go, but it is important to consider a loved ones’ feelings. Stuff implies little or no value. When you are moving out of a long time home many people feel the are leaving treasured lifetime moments.

Choosing words wisely can help assure an elderly or older person that you appreciate the difficulty in deciding what to keep, what to sell or what to donate or give to others.

Estate sale companies trained or very experienced in the eldercare field can be of great assistance helping a family to ease the stress and burden on their loved one. Estate liquidators wear many hats. Consulting with an estate sale company should be done before anything is eliminated or given away to assist families in how they approach the downsizing to assisted living or other care facilities. An estate  liquidator will take a gentle third party approach.

Although professionals and others may call it stuff, when dealing with an owner, that is not a wise word to use. No longer necessary, too large, will you really need it, are just a few samples of things you can say with diplomacy.

Consulting with professional estate sale companies can be of great assistance for families and their loved ones.

Just remember it isn’t just stuff. It’s a lifetime to the owner.
