Estate Sale in Falls Church, VA -vintage clothes, shoes, jewelry, African Art & more

Estate Sales News went to Falls Church, VA for an estate sale being conducted this weekend by Bethesda Estate Service LLC. They were featured in the Washingtonian. They are just beginning their setup so we did two short videos to showcase what you will find at this news worthy estate sale. They use a unique number system from their website called Get A Number. Be sure to check it out. The sale is June 20 – June 23, 10am – 2pm.

This estate sale is filled with beautiful items from Thailand where the owner was born and spent most of her childhood and then moved to Nairobi Kenya which is why there are also collections of African art and carvings. For the vintage clothing, shoes, purses, and wallet person this house is a treasure trove. There is much jewelry and the purses and shoes are designer names. There is very limited space on the lower level for taking video so we took only a few pieces to the second level. There are ties, vintage suite cases and so much more. A service for 12 + in “bronze” that they used and brought from Thailand. Beautiful Thai pillows from will be seen when you first enter this home.

Estate Sales News is on the road to Falls Church VA next week

on the roadEstate Sales News will be back on the road to cover a tag sale being held by Bethesda Estate Sale Service, LLC. The sale will be held Thursday, June 20 – Sunday, June 23 from 10am – 2pm. The owner lived in Kenya and Thailand so we expect to see some very unusual items.

We had an opportunity to speak with Eric Grossmeyer of Heritage Estate Settlement from Milwaukee, WI today and he reported the Gordon Farmer Sale in North Augusta, SC was a success. We also talked with Jackie Wise from Crown Estate Sales in southern California and Danna McCallum and Dan Jordan of Again L.A. Estate Sales. A lot of effort and work generated good sales.

Estate Sale Sellers and Buyers – What you should expect

Carol Madden, Editor, ESNEstate Sales News has been visiting sales across the country and speaking with different liquidators not only at sales we have visited, but conducting interviews by phone. We are constantly gathering information on the estate sales business.  I’m hearing the same refrain over and over concerning estate sale sellers and buyers so let’s do some bullet points to see if we can assist.

  • Decide before you hire an estate liquidator if you consider them to be knowledgeable.
  • Make sure you feel they will do a professional job.
  • Discuss with them the items of value you have and see if you are in agreement and what they feel are fair prices.
  • Once you have done these things and hired a company, remember you have hired professionals let them do their job, to price and sell your items. Liquidators have enough problems with today’s buyers and it is very unhelpful to have sellers wanting to raise prices. Remember you did your research, interviewed them and made a decision – you hired them to sell.

  • When you attend an estate sale, this is “not” an auction. The items are priced just like in a retail store. These items belong to a seller, not the estate sales company.
  • Don’t ask an estate sale company to cut their price as soon as the door opens. This is offensive.
  • If you don’t want to pay a price for an item ask if they will take a bid.
  • Remember estate sales companies have been hired by the sellers, are being paid by the sellers and are not working for you the buyer. Their job is to get the best possible price.
  • Negotiating is part of the process, but done in a courteous and fair manner.
  • Most estate sale companies have some kind of structured discount process based on the number of days the sale will be conducted. Ask if they do and what it is.

Again L.A. Estate Services estate sale – jewelry, gemstones, everywhere

Estate Sales News visited Dan Jordan and Danna McCallum of Again L.A Estate Services in Los Angeles to report on their upcoming sale for a woman named Belle whose husband was a jeweler/gemologist for over 50 years. In my 25 plus years in the estate liquidation business I have never seen anything the likes of this. Because of the massiveness of the sale and it is spread over 2 levels of the home we split the video.

Dan told me he had been in the business about 15 years and the estate sales business was an off shoot of his antique shop in Silver Lake. He started doing more estate sales and did not have time to buy antiques for his shop along with a troubled economy it pushed him into doing estate sales. Danna had been working with another man named Al who retired and having known each other for some years and occasionally working together they became partners. Danna has over 20 years of experience working estate sales.

Dan said “we do not target dealers and haven’t since day one of our partnership. Our market is the collector, young people furnishing their homes and the general public. Our obligation is to get the most for our client. We try to make sure the homes are empty so our sales run over a multi day period. We start with day one at full price and have a set discount structure that we follow, 20%, 30%, 50% and sometimes in large homes or estates the last day is 75%. We want to clear out the house and maximize.” Dan said “we price every single thing in the house, something Danna brought to the partnership and I have embraced. This way no surprises at check out. Everyone knows what to expect”. We have an extensive email list by invitation only so good behavior counts.
