2014 Was A Big Year For Estate Sales – Happy New Year and Welcome 2015

2015-fireworks-art-word2014 saw a huge growth in the estate sale industry. When the year started there were approximately 5,000 estate sale companies and by today December 31st the number has grown to almost 7,000.

Almost every area of the country saw growth. The metro areas saw the biggest increase.

During 2014 many changes took place including laws pertaining to the sale of ivory, endangered species, and migratory birds.

In many areas estate sale companies opened consignment stores and included online auctions in their repertoire.

A second estate sale conference was held in Memphis, TN by EstateSales.Net and 2015 will see a third conference in Chicacgo at the end of June.

Estate sale listing websites greatly increased their capabilities. These websites that started out as places to list estate sales and estate sale companies now offer everything from online auctions, routing to an estate sale, to how to choose an estate sale company. Even other new estate sale listing websites were formed.

Educational opportunities abound and the number of companies that teach how to work with senior citizens and the elderly also increased.

All in all 2014 has been quite a year and here at EstateSalesNews.com we have tried to provide coverage, news, and a source for sellers, estate sale companies, and buyers.

We wish you all a Happy New Year. May it be healthy and prosperous.

Thanksgiving Week And Estate Sales

Estate Sales NewsThis is family week for millions of Americans celebrating Thanksgiving and either cooking at home or traveling to family.

This week reminds us that families dealing with the estates of loved ones is often a difficult time and part of the job of the estate liquidator is to be understanding and help relieve some of the stress. The estate sale liquidator and many of their staff wear many hats.

For most this week is a day to rest, recoup, and enjoy their family.

EstateSalesNews.com will be enjoying this Thanksgiving week with our family too.

Today is our last day to publish this week. We’ll be back on Monday, December 1st.

We wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving with the joy and blessings of family and friends and our United States.

Majolica – ThrowBack Thursday For Estate Sales From the 19th Century

Slide1Today Estate Sales News is throwing back to the 19th century to some beautiful earthenware pottery that we call Majolica which was first created in 1851 by Mintons Ltd. in England. It was created for the Great Exposition then and known as Palissy ware. Palissy was a tip of the hat to Bernard Palissy a 16th century potter who used naturalistic and animal motifs with bold splashes of color.

Tin glazed pottery had been made by Mintons for sometime which was opaque, white, shiny, and painted with color. This was in the Italian Renaissance maiolica which they Anglicized to majolica.

Wedgwood began manufacturing majolica 10 years after Mintons and soon numerous smaller Staffordshire potteries around Burslem and Stoke-On-Trent and specialized in green majolica wares. According to Wikipedia majolica was influenced by the design of old “Cauliflower” and “Pineapple” teapots made by Thomas Whieldon.

As time passed European potteries started making majolica and then it was started to be made in the United States in the 1880s’.

Guest Article From Lela Of Trash Find Redesigned – Why Buy At Estate Sales

10505188_661676120592763_2462403117424468603_oEstate Sales News is happy to have a guest article by Lela, Trash Find Redesigned, a New Jersey Mom and estate sale chaser who has found a way to bring her love of estate sales and what can be found and done with the items at estate liquidations.

Here is an introduction from Lela.

“Hello, my name is Lela. I am happy to admit… I am totally hooked on Estate Sales. I have a fabulous husband, 3 awesome kids, one beautiful daughter-in-law, and 2 adorable grand-pups. I am on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and my own website all of which are called Trash Find Redesigned.

Estate Sales are fabulous places to find unique and interesting items. I really enjoy finding items with potential and creating something special with them. I don’t do this for profit. I really do it in hopes that my family, friends, and others will enjoy. Wait, who am I kidding… I do it so that I can enjoy!

Two summers ago, two of my bigger finds were featured on ABC’s Good Morning America! Lara Spencer (also host of Flea Market Flip) transformed my $10 Estate Sale vanity into a treasure along with a vintage Amish bench that I also found.

My husband and I had hosted an outdoor engagement party for my son and his fiance two years ago. Most of the items that I used were bought at estate sales which I had transformed into something special for the party. Many people had asked where I got all of the vintage pieces. When I told them estate sales, they were totally intrigued.

As I sit here on my couch, I count 44 items that were all finds from various Estate Sales. To name a few: a vintage iron, farmhouse windows, Mason jars, vintage glass door knobs, an antique chalkboard, a wrought iron parlor chair, a wooden toolbox, and so on and so forth.

I myself am a lover of vintage items, but Estate Sales can have everything from brand spankin’ new to barely used to modern, vintage, collectable, or antique.

If you’re new to shopping at Estate Sales, I would suggest spending a day trying to visit a few different ones. Map out your choices, leave early with coffee in hand, and head out for a fun day of shopping like you’ve never shopped before. Oh, don’t forget to pack a lunch, drinks, and snacks. You won’t want to stop once you get started. I also pack an ESS KIT. I never leave home without it… you’ll have to visit my website to see what an ESS KIT is.

So my son tells me he is moving to a larger apartment next month and desperately needs furniture. Hmm, wonder where I can get a great deal on some pieces of furniture. My mission for the next several weeks, if I choose to accept it – bedroom furniture, a kitchen table, coffee table, a couch and some knick knacks. What fun, wish me luck!

Lela”

Estate Sales News is Traveling Today to Michigan

125px-Flag_of_MichiganEstate Sales News is flying to Michigan today to cover two fabulous and unique estate sales and an auction that is working along side an estate sale.

Known as the Wolverine state or Great Lake state we have an opportunity to interview three very experienced individuals in estate sales, one of whom is also an auctioneer and one is also an appraiser.

The estate sales are in two different areas of Michigan and one will be taking place this weekend, the other estate sale and auction will be next weekend.

These estates are very diverse. One is the estate of woman from a nationally known family and will feature collections that are seen once, maybe twice in a lifetime along with a classic car and the other is the estate of a well known sportsman and will have an estate sale starting on Friday with an auction of a taxidermy collection on Saturday.

We hope to have two videos for you for the sale this weekend and two for the estate sale and auction for next weekend.

Estate Sales Good News – Estate Sale Clients, Customers & Estate Sale Companies

estate sales good newsSo many times in all walks of life we hear the “bad” news on radio, television, and in print. Estate Sales News has reported on estate liquidators making the bad news on television and print. For the next few weeks, one day a week (and the day is subject to change weekly) we want to share what clients and customers are saying about many estate sale companies. We start today. Neither the estate sale company featured here or the clients were compensated. We do not endorse any contributor. We are sharing their good news with you.

“Our home recently sold and we were faced with having to move after 24 years in a months time. This allowed very little time to find a place to live not to mention clear a 5000 sq. ft. home of all its belongings.

We found Platinum Estate Sales of Distinction to be the perfect solution to this overwhelming task. I have to admit that when we met with Jeanette the owner and she told us they have a solid history of selling 95% of contents we were a bit skeptical.

Well….. we were pleasantly surprised, because they did exactly that.

In addition we had to do nothing. Jeanette and her staff came in and handled everything from set up, sale, and delivery of the items purchased seeing they went out the door without damage to our home. Jeanette had the home very well staffed during the sale to protect the home and contents. We had several neighbors drop by the sale that have plans of downsizing to see what kind of company draws this many people to a estate sale. We would recommend this company to anyone downsizing or needing to clear a home.”

Each estate sale is different and so is each estate sale company. Some Good News on Tuesday.

Joan Rivers Gave Her Daughter Melissa Good Advice – Estate Sales & Auctions

To educateReading Sunday about the passing of Joan Rivers and her instructions Estate Sales News was interested in what Ms. Rivers had told the Daily Beast that she had told her daughter Melissa, “Sell anything and everything you don’t want. Don’t feel beholden to my possessions”. Although she didn’t suggest how to sell her possessions estate sales for many, auctions for others are the primary way to liquidate.

After reading this we used CRTS (Certified Relocation Specialists) and Grandparents.com. to research other opinions.

Whether you are downsizing or preparing your instructions for the end of life, it is a benefit to tell your family or friends (if no family) your feelings about the disposal of your possessions and how you feel and if you’re going to change your life style start by hiring a professional, be it an estate sale company or auction or in many instances today a combination depending on what is to be sold and their value.

In today’s ever changing world with costs rising many people are choosing to reduce their space and costs (including moving to less expensive areas). Many older individuals are moving to assisted living or moving in with family and have very limited space for their belongings.

Deciding what to keep or not to keep is important for peace of mind. It helps reduce stress and emotional discomfort for you and your family.

In some instances (this happened recently with a friend’s father moving to assisted living) the year before moving it is a good idea to invite family in to decide what items they would like to have.

This also makes it much easier when it comes time to bring in a liquidator.

Estate Sales News regrets the passing of Joan Rivers and extends our sympathy to her family and friends. We also thank her for making us laugh and leaving all of us with some good advice.

Estate Sale Friday – What, Where, How, When

Estate Sale signToday is the beginning of most estate sales across the country. Some started yesterday and some will start tomorrow.

When preparing to go shopping be prepared. Print out the sales you want to attend or have them on your smart phone. Have a GPS or maps done to send you on your way. Know whether the estate sale companies you visit take cash, credit or checks.

If you are an estate sale company by now advertising is done (print, social media, and internet) everything in the property has been staged and priced. Your staff is ready, permits are on hand if necessary, bags, boxes, and paper for wrapping are in place and you are counting down to the opening of the door. Your entrance system is also in place (number system, list, etc. or nothing just as you come).

Hopefully if you have sellers or heirs they are prepared to let the estate sale professionals they hired do their job.

If you haven’t already decided what or where to go check out EstateSales.NET, EstateSales.org, Estatesale.com or the newer site Tagsellit.com

Whatever you decide, have fun, use estate sale etiquette and shop and save.
